It's frustrating when zippers break suddenly, such as when their teeth separate and the zipper slider won't open and close them anymore. This can be embarrassing if it's on your pants zipper or if it's on a backpack and all of your things fall out. However, there are several ways of fixing a separated zipper. You can either try to fix the slider itself or realign the zipper by taking it apart and putting it back together. One of these methods is likely to fix the majority of zippers that have separated.
If there was a Hall of Fame for the most frustrating ordeals that can happen to you on any given day, having a broken zipper would receive a first-ballot induction. On the bright side, fixing the issue is possible with the right tools. Here is how to fix a zipper with the slider on one side of the track.
what to do when zipper gets off track
Knowing how to fix a zipper with the slider on one side of the track will take patience before you can master it. However, once you can maneuver around any zipper sliders, the aggravation of an off-track clasp will no longer frustrate you! FixnZip has a zipper slider replacement for all your fastening items like coats, tents, suitcases, and more. Check out our shop today to find the answers to your problems.
Keeping your garment clean is going to be a big part of keeping your zippers healthy, especially if you found your zipper to have dirt, debris, corrosion, or salt damage. This is more likely if your stuck zipper is on a suitcase or backpack. Bags and backpacks are prone to collecting dirt and debris and are more likely to experience corrosion. Clean your zipper by applying some water with a spray bottle and using an old toothbrush to scrub along the teeth and zipper track to get out any dirt, debris, or sediment that may be stuck there.
Sometimes only one side of the slider comes off the tracks of a zipper, but other times, the whole slider and zipper tab unit is derailed. While this might seem like a sad day, really the slider just needs to be reattached.
All Offtrack color combinations are visually attractive including the mottled Sand/Black but the Silver-Green combination, with its multiple-hued panels and stylized high-viz and reflective inserts, gets a lot of (very) positive comments.
Environmental conditions when using the Offtrack jacket or full combination varied from just below 0C (32F) to 21C (70F) and of course, the cooler temperatures introduce significant windchill as well.
It is also important to remember to pull the slider slowly, both while opening and closing. This helps prevent the zipper from getting caught on the fabric of the jacket, causing the slider to get stuck or going off track. If the fabric does get caught in the slider, pull it out very slowly, taking care to not damage the material or the zipper itself.
If you zipper is sticky or gets stuck easily you can use Zipper-Ease* to make it zip smoother. If you zipper pull gets broken or it falls off, you can add a new zipper pull. You can buy a set of zipper pulls and zipper stops* with a handy tool to do it yourself. Just make sure you match the same size, style, and color.
Garage doors can also come off the tracks when the horizontal tracks are misaligned. The horizontal tracks need to be installed parallel, and they need to be aligned properly with the vertical rails. If the tracks are loose or they are not lined up properly, you will have problems.
This is a easy way to fix a zipper without replacing it. This method is really fast too. It works when the zipper pull doesn't close the zipper together anymore. I don't really like to replace zippers, because they always come out a little bit wavy when I do it myself.
If you haven't used many high-end bags or pouches, you may think "a zipper is just a zipper". But, think about this....How many products have you used that feature subpar zippers? You'll see the signs of a cheap zipper when the pull tab snaps off after a bit of use and the zipper will eventually come off track (causing a massive headache for you to fix...if you can manage to fix it).
You might have to lightly yank on the zipper head or apply steadily increasing pressure on one side of the zipper track or the other while tugging on the zipper head. It'll probably work easiest if you hold the stopper side of the zipper track while tugging the zipper head towards the stopper.
It's important to note that the Houdini, like many other zippered widgets, has a very small locking zipper head. It unlocks when the pull tab is pulled straight outwards (perpendicular to the track) and prevents the jacket from unzipping itself while in use. You will not be able to easily move the zipper head without pulling on the pull tab.
Inside, the Offtrack features the aforementioned full-length quilted liner and full-length waterproof liner which, for me, really stretches this kit into lower temperatures. The liners can be used in conjunction with one another or separately and attach to the garment via zippers and snaps. The jacket and pants can also be zipped together via the two-thirds length zipper at the waist.
With the liners out and the garment adjusted properly, the Offtrack feels like a more off-road oriented adventure suit. Its lightweight and relatively good breathability helps when tackling trails during all but the hottest times of the year.
Start with the track that connects the back of each bag. Connect them just as you would a jacket zipper, ensuring that the zipper pull is in the fully opened position and touching the zipper stop at the end. Slide the non-pull side into the two zipper pulls. (Important: Both pulls should be together at the end of the track.)
Next, you probably already know that the ridged metal or plastic rectangles running down the inside of the zipper are called teeth. These will notch inside each other, creating a smooth, closed line, when you zip the zipper shut. When meshed together, these teeth are technically called a chain.
This may seem impossible after learning about all the carefully fitted and moving parts of a basic zipper! You may find yourself wondering, how do you reattach a zipper when something goes wrong with its basic components?
In some cases, if you do not want your repair to look obvious, you may need to put in a little more work, such as when you have to stitch a zipper back into a dress using a couture hand-sewing technique. If you find yourself in an emergency situation, you can use a key ring or rubber band to hold your zipper up until you can fix it for real!
A zipper track is made up of dozens of teeth, each of which combines a hook and a hollow. The idea is to latch every hook on each of the two tracks into a hollow on the opposite track. The latching mechanism, called the slide, is just a collection of wedges.
As the slide moves up the zipper, the two teeth strips must enter at a specific angle. As the strips move through the slide, the slide's inclined edges push the teeth toward each other. The strips are offset from each other, so each hollow settles onto a hook in sequence. For this to work properly, each tooth must be exactly the same size and shape, and they all must be perfectly positioned on the track. This would be all but impossible without modern manufacturing technology.
In a well-made zipper, the interlocking teeth form an incredibly secure bond -- it is very difficult to separate the teeth by pulling the two strips apart. But the slide can easily separate the teeth, using a simple plow-shaped wedge. When the slide is pulled down, the wedge pushes against the slanted edges of the hooks, pivoting each tooth off of the tooth below it. Just like that, the zipper tracks are detached.

In the first case, the issue with your tent zipper is likely due to the track. The track may be bent, or a piece of fabric or dirt may be stuck in the zipper. This type of problem cannot be solved by replacing the zipper slider.
In the third case, unfortunately, even the best tent repair kit will not help. In this case, the whole zipper track must be replaced. Unless you have excellent sewing skills, you will need to take your tent to a tailor to have it professionally repaired.
FixnZip is easier to install before the tent has been set up because there is less tension. The product will start anywhere along a zipper track, so you do not have to worry about getting the old zipper slider unstuck.
Look at the zipper from the inside and the outside of the tent to see which side the zipper teeth are visible on. Start by loosening the thumbscrew, and slide both sides of the zipper track into the FixnZip. The thumbscrew must be on the same side as the zipper teeth.
When both sides of the track are in the device, tighten the thumbscrew all the way and then loosen it about a quarter of a turn. Then slide the FixnZip down the zipper track. The zip should close as you slide it down the track.
How to get fabric out of a zipper: There are 4 simple steps you can take to get the fabric out of your zipper. First, you need to find the problem spot. Second, use a pin to free the fabric being careful not to pull it. Pulling bends the zipper track. Finally, cut stubborn threads with a razor blade.
Believe it or not, there are only 2 ways where your zipper gets something stuck in its track. The first way is that the zipper track teeth are not locking into place correctly and they leave a little gap. 2ff7e9595c
